Venus Fly Trap

Venus Fly Trap Tips

  • Watering:

First of all you have to keep the soil very moist. You have to water it at least once a week or mostly everyday. You can water it with rain water or distilled water. DONT USE REGULAR TAP WATER!

The minerals in the tap water can kill the venus fly trap. Dont over water it or you will kill it. If you let it dry out the roots of it will begin to rot, so keep it moist.

  • Light:

Sun light is very important to the venus fly trap. You can either place the venus fly trap near a window sill but dont place in direct sunlight with the container on top. This will overheat the plant and will kill it. You can also put it under flourescent lightbulbs or in a terrarium. Like i said if in terrarium it will overheat in direct sunlight only place it in the sun for half a day.

  • Winter Care

The Venus Fly Trap needs to hibernate for at least 3-4 months ( Nov-Feb) . During that time the Venus Fly Trap wont grow and some of the leaves may die.During the time of hibernating dont give it lots of sunlight and place it in a cooler area. During the Spring the Venus Fly Trap will grow much bigger

  • Feeding the Venus Fly Trap

The Venus Fly Trap will eat houseflies, grasshoppers, crickets, ants, nats, and moths or any other insect. Never Feed It Raw Meat this will kill the plant or either

kill the leaf! The Venus Fly Trap leafs may only close 3-4 times, so don't mess with it by poking it. After used 3-4 time the leaf will die. After the leaf dies new bigger one will grow.

  • Humidity

First of all the venus fly trap need lots of humidity. You can use a terrarium for the humidity. Remember don't over heat it this will kill the plant. Try to protect it from Drafts, Air Conditioners ,and heaters.

  • Soil

Dionaea Muscipula are very picky about soil. It grows well in pure "Sphagnum Peat Moss", the standard 1:1 peat:sand "CP mix". I have found 4:1 peat:sand in tall pots (soil surface at least 5cm (2 inches) above the water level) to work best. Avoid perlite, pumice, and other potentially salty soil components.Sow seeds of Dionaea muscipula on the surface of your medium of choice. About 3 mm of washed quartz sand over CP mix works well as does a layer of finely chopped live sphagnum moss over CP mix.
